French Indian wars - Attack to the Fort - July 16, 2022

Last Saturday my mates played a scenario set during the French Indian wars.

It was a generic scenario not linked to a specific historical battle. It was an easy “assault to the fort” but they decided to play it two times … or better … they decided to play a first scenario in which the English troops were the besieging force and another one in which it was the contrary … this time the French were forced to defense. For this reason Ezio prepared two different banners.

For a French fort or ...

... an English fort ... it depends ...

A battle in Canada cannot be a real battle without a river and some canoes

My mates spent a day playing this two scenarios ... below some Canadians and Indians that are approaching ...

... a last look before to play a new scenario

In the second battle the French troops had to defend ...

... and English forces are eager to conquer the fort

In both games the besieged win

Battle of Lake George - Camp Attack - May 14, 2022

Last Saturday my mates Ezio and Jimmy dedided to play an historical scenario using Rebels and Patriots printed by Osprey.

It was a battle fought during French-Indian wars in September 8, 1755. The battle was set in the north of New York province and it was part of a the British campaign to expel the French forces from North America.

This is the battle field my friends prepared ...

... this is the picture that inspired them

A French, Canadian and Indian of 1,582 men under the command of the Baron de Dieskau attacked 2,932 men including 200 Mohawks under Major General William Johnson.

General Johnson with his forces advance via Lake George and Lake Campalain against the French Fort St. Frederic. Johnson, camped 25 km north to Fort Edward (an English fort), sent a messager to Fort Edward garrison to ask reinforcement  ... unfortunately the messager was intercepted and in this way the French commander obtained the position of enemies.

On September 8, William's column marched directly straight into the trap prepared by Baron de Dieskau. It was knonw as the "Bloody Morning Scout". After a short battle the English were forced to come back to their camp.

My mates decided to play the assault to Johnson's camp.

After the success of the first attack Dieskau ordered to his Canadians and Indians to charge the enemy till the camp. Unfotunately the Indians and the Canadians, shaken by the loss of their leader during the fight before, attacked the camp without energy so the French commander formed a column of 222 grenadiers directly against Johnson's camp.

The English forces hurriedly constructed defensive barricates using wagons, overturned boats and trees.

Once the grenadiers were out in the open ground the British gunners crewing Johnson's three cannond loaded them with grapeshot cutting the French ranks.

Baron de Dieskau was hit by the cannons and died during the fight. After the dead of the Baron and the  loss of the Canadian leader in the previously fight, French were forced to retire.

In our battle the cannon was destroyed by the Indians ...

... that in this opened the way to the Canadians

After a long fight the English troops pushed away the enemy and won the battle

Von Rall and Von Bose Hessian regiments for Musket&Tomahawk II - June 2020

During the Italian lockdown, Studio Tomahawk published the second version of his rules system: Musket & Tomahawk.

In the past years I played with their first version and I found it very amazing. In the last weeks every times they can … Aurelian, Riccardo and Andrea played it … and they confirmed me the second release is fantastic. I played some battles with my son last month and I can confirm their opinion.

So … I decided to paint two army for two different periods: A French army for French-Indian wars and another of English for the AWI.

In the meanwhile Dadi e Piombo asked me another article for the next number of the magazine and a friend of mine decided to give me a WWII British Airborne started army … so now I have finished only to paint part of the English AWI army: the Hessian troops.
I bought a box of Warlord Hessian regiment and some plastic sprue to create two different command groups with the support of some jägers.

Part of the hessian forces were companies of jägers. These were recruited from woodsmen and armed with rifled muskets that have a greater accuracy than the smoothbore muskets carried by other infantry.

Generally the jägers served as individual companies on foot. I assembled them using the plastic sprue of the Warlord but to increase their poses I utilized some Victrix and Perry plastic parts

For the regular troops I decided to paint two regiments: Von Rall and Von Bose

The Hessians  served as auxiliaries in the British army during American Revolution. Great part of them came from two German states: Hesse-Kassel and Hesse Hanau and they took part to many of battles across North America.
The Hessian regiments were organised in the same way of the Prussian army. A typical infantry regiment was composed of five companies of musketeers or fusiliers and one of grenadiers.

Rall's Regiment was a regiment of grenadiers.

A image from "An Illustrated Encyclopedia of Uniforms from 1775-83 by Lorenz books
They arrived in America on August 15, 1776 and started to fight in the Long Island invasion twelve days later.  They fought at Chatterton's Hill, White Plains, Fort Wahington.

When the British and Hessian forces were sent into winter quarters, Colonel von Rall was given command of the troops at Trenton. On December 26, 1777 General Washington attacked Trenton and surprise cost to the Hessians 22 killed and 948  prisoners.

Their commander, the colonel Rall, was  mortally wounded during the battle. He was shot twice and he died during the night

Only 500 men escaped from the battle and were used to form other combined battalions ending the war fighting in the Quebec army

The regiment of musketeers I painted arrived in America in 1776 remaning in New York until October 1778. His original name was “Von Trümbach” … they changed name a couple of years later when Carl Von Bose became the regiment’s Commander.

The regiment took part to many actions (ie New York, Savannah, Charleston, Guilford Courthouse and Yorktown. They received a special note for his bravery during Guilford Courthouse battle
I was inspired by to choose this unit by the pics I found below

The main body of the unit surrendered with Cornwallis's army at Yorktown

French-Indian forces for the new musket and tomahawks II

With the covid pandemic and the release of the second version of Musket and Tomahawks many of my clubmates rediscovered the Franco-Indian wars

For example my friends Aurelian painted some Scottish units ...

... and to increase his collection of indian warriors

On contrary I decided for the French forces ... Some Compagnie franche de la marine

The Naval Department of France began using the Compagnies to defend their control of the fur trade in North America with certain tribes and the safety of local civilians from raiding nations of the Iroquois Confederacy ... so why not to paint some coureur de bois ...

... and some regulars of the La Sarre Regiment

Stay in touch ... these units will fight soon ...
